ONE of the building industry's top regional quality awards has gone to a South Lakeland site manger for the fifth time. Mike Hillbeck, of Kendal-based Russell Armer Homes, scooped the prestigious Pride in the Job award at a northwest National House Building Council (NHBC) ceremony in Manchester. Described as a 'remarkable achievement', the 54 year-old said he was pleased and honoured to receive recognition of his work at the site of an old steam laundry in Ingleton.

Mike - who has been with Russell Armer for 15 years - has spearheaded the Old Laundry Mews development, which boasts five houses and 11 apartments. He said: "This award is special because it comes from the building industry. We have to prove we have proper, effective control over every aspect of a site - and produce high quality homes. "It's all about attention to detail and being organised! "Obviously, it's great to win for the fifth time, not just for myself, but for the company. Thank you for your kind donations. I have raised £680 so far which is fantastic!

After an appallingly wet Saturday, Sunday dawned clear which was a great relief myself and the other 699 riders booked in for the event . Steady pleasant riding with a few gentle ups and downs took us under Skiddaw with great views of Bassenthwaite Lake on the way to Cockermouth and the first food/ drink pit stop. A steady climb and then back lanes (flooded in places) through the beautiful Vale of Lorton.

Next came the big climb up Whinlatter Pass, steep but rideable to begin with, a frustrating drop down to the river and then a steady pull to the summit and applause from spectators. Pretty pleased that I managed to stay on the pedals for this climb, plenty were pushing but also got passed by some who seemed impervious to the gradient!

Fast descent slowing for the wet z bends at the bottom, unlike the Stagecoach bus which was scarily right up my bum on the slippy bends. Pleasant riding across to Derwentwater with a steep little kick near Cat Bells. Down to Grange and back up the Lakeside to Keswick. Reading 38 miles and 2 hours 35 ride time on my speedo, 2 hours 48minutes official time . The training paid off and I didn’t feel too bad, however hats off to those who did the 85 mile 3 passes route!

Builders pretty in pink are getting into the party spirit to start next weekend's fifth international Kendal street festival.

The construction team at Russell Armer's Cock and Dolphin development is putting up a giant 25 metre bow across the old pub site and sporting bright Mintfest pink safety kit.

Martyn Nicholson, managing director of the firm which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, said the men wanted to do their bit to promote both the 2011 gathering and Kendal itself.

He explained: "Cock and Dolphin is a well-known landmark at the southern entrance to the town. The organisers of Mintfest put on a fantastic event, attracting thousands, and we wanted to add to the atmosphere by responding to the 'go pink' call.

"Around 50 metres of fabric went into the bow, ably sewn by Karen Cowgill, our company accountant. It spans the full width of the site."

Cruising The Crest to Celebrate

England's longest lake played host to 50th anniversary celebrations of one of the area's best-known housing developers.

Award-winning Russell Armer Homes welcomed 130 guests from across Europe for a Windermere charity cruise in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support and the Great North Air Ambulance.

David Russell, founder of the Kendal business which has built over 3,000 homes, flew from France to join friends of the firm from Spain, Jersey and across northern England.

Cycle for a reason ... let that reason be Cumbria Community Foundation!

This autumn sees the launch of a very special cycling event in Cumbria - The Jennings Rivers Ride.

It’s a series of three bike rides starting and finishing in Keswick and following the route of the devastating floods of 2009.

The reason these rides are special is, unlike other cycle sportives, these have been organised by a local charity - Cumbria Community Foundation - and the entrance fee will raise money for good Cumbrian causes.

If that wasn’t enough, it is a chance for entrants to get sponsors to raise money for any other charity that is close to their heart. Everyone’s a winner!

There are three rides on 18 September 2011:

You can choose from The Family Ride, an all inclusive event that challenges youngsters (and their parents / guardians) to ride a distance of just over eight miles through the beautiful north lakes and taking in the rebuilt Newlands Beck Bridge. The Middle Distance Event is great for anyone looking for a testing but achievable cycling challenge. The route will appeal to both cycling novices (with some preparation) and experienced riders alike. You’ll cycle close to 40 miles along lovely roads in the lakes, heading out towards Cockermouth, crossing the Ouse Bridge and returning via the rebuilt Lorton Bridge and finishing with a climb over Whinlatter Pass. The Big Day Out Ride aims to challenge the more experienced rider and heads all the way out to the Irish Sea at Workington via Cockermouth. If that was not already enough, riders return to Keswick via Honister, Newlands and Whinlatter passes to complete an epic ride of over 85 miles – although with those hills it is sure to feel more like a hundred!

As keys were handed over for his first home Brad Sharpe had plenty of reasons to celebrate.

The Ingleton health and safety assistant and coach driver has been saving hard for eight years and - at the age of 22 - clinched his dream of buying a place of his own.

Moving into a newly completed apartment in the village's Old Laundry Mews development signalled a huge achievement for Brad.

Not only has he been working for this since he was 14, but has bucked national trends into the bargain.

While the average age of first-time buyers has stayed at around 31, those doing it without financial backing from relatives has risen from 33 to 37.

Brad, who had lived with his parents in High Bentham, started working for Ingleton coach operators Bibbys while still at school and has stayed with the company.

He explained: "I knew it was going to be hard for me getting on the property ladder because I m young and have no credit history. Thanks to years of saving, and help from my parents, I got the deposit together.

"I still can't believe it. It's so tough for people of my age and I'm incredibly lucky."

An Air Ambulance Base to be Proud Of

The Pride of Cumbria air ambulance team now have a base to be proud of, thanks to the generosity of local firms including Russell Armer Homes. The ambulance takes to the skies from its base at Langwathby, near Penrith, bringing rapid emergency medical help to people in need.

Over the years we have built up close links with this life-saving charity and our staff are constantly inspired by the work they do. So, when the Pride of Cumbria team asked us to help out with a major refurbishment at their base, we were delighted to give our support.

We and our suppliers gave a new kitchen, shower, paving blocks and flags free of charge, which were fitted for free by local contractors.

The work has made a huge difference to the air ambulance team, and the money saved can now be spent on the crucial work of saving lives. Last year the Pride of Cumbria air ambulance cost £1.3 million to run.

A huge thank you to everybody who made our annual charity quiz night such a success yet again.

Thanks to your generosity we raised around £900 for our two chosen charities, Macmillan Cancer Support and the Great North Air Ambulance. We are delighted to keep supporting these two worthy causes. The tremendous work they do is an inspiration to everybody here at Russell Armer Homes.

We had a great turnout for our 10th annual charity quiz night and supper at Kendal Rugby Club. People travelled from as far afield as Newcastle, Wakefield and all corners of Cumbria to support this hugely popular event on the charity calendar.

Competing for the trophy this year were 28 teams of four. Congratulations to solicitors Hayton Winkley, winners for the second time, and to runners-up Burgundy's Wine Bar.

A big thank you to all the companies who made the evening so successful with their generous donations of money and raffle prizes. It was a fantastic night with a great atmosphere and we are already looking forward to next year!

Good News For The Housing Industry

Russell Armer Homes have welcomed the Government's pledge to make new housing projects much easier to get off the ground.

Our managing director Martyn Nicholson joined industry leaders at a major conference in London this week where Housing Minister Grant Shapps promised to reduce the burden of red tape on the housing industry.

Mr Shapps told developers they had to navigate "an alphabet soup of regulations" but he was determined to "make it easier to build the homes this country needs".

The message is "good news" for the housing industry according to Martyn Nicholson of Russell Armer Homes.

Welcoming the Housing Minister's pledge to speed up and reduce the cost of getting new housing developments under way, Mr Nicholson said, "It's a very long process. Typically, from identifying a site to starting on site could take between one and three years. So if the Government can do anything to reduce that period, it can only be good news."

After months of hard work and fundraising the Penrith club hit their goal of £54,000 to bring the old changing rooms up to FA standard.

It was wellies, hard hats and high-visibility jackets all round when the youngsters of Old Hutton Primary School paid us a visit on site.

Fortunately the sun stayed out as the party of infants, school staff and parents were guided around Pear Tree Park by our construction director, Andrew Taylor. This was the school’s third visit to our site in Holme village and it’s always a pleasure to show them round.

The children loved seeing men at work in their diggers, and they were excited to look inside an unfinished house where they could see all the pipework.

Infant class teacher Molly Long told us: “It was a super visit and the children learned so much. The parents also were delighted with the fact we could go and see houses being built first-hand.”

This term the infants have been learning about houses and homes across the school curriculum – from building Lego houses in design and technology, to making a collage of the Three Little Pigs in art. The visit has helped to bring the topic to life and, back in the classroom, they have been making lists of everything needed to build a house. Their next project is even more ambitious - a set of instructions on how to build a house from scratch!

The work done by Macmillan Cancer Support across the county is an inspiration to our staff.

It’s our pleasure to help them out with funding whenever we can, and we were delighted to present Macmillan with a cheque for £553. A large part of the money was raised at our recent charity quiz night, which was generously supported by many local business people and also helped to raise money for the Great North Air Ambulance. The total was topped up to £553 thanks to the sale of items such as artists’ impressions of houses to our customers.

OUR CHARITY QUIZ NIGHT RAISES £890

A big thank you to all the colleagues and business people who made our annual charity quiz night such a successful event yet again.

Thanks to your generosity we raised £890 for two charities which are making a real difference to the lives of people here in Cumbria – the Great North Air Ambulance and Macmillan Cancer Support.

Over the years we have built up close links with these worthy causes and we are delighted that each will now receive a cheque for £445 from Russell Armer Homes.

Our annual quiz night with pie-and-pea supper has become a popular and well-supported event on the Cumbrian charity calendar. Now into its ninth year, the quiz night usually takes place in November but the severe wintry weather forced us to postpone the 2009 quiz until this month.

Despite the delay, the night was still extremely well supported. Some 22 teams of Russell Armer colleagues and local business people travelled from across the county to Kendal Rugby Club to take part. First-timers the Furness Building Society were delighted to collect the winning trophy.

Russell Armer managing director Martyn Nicholson said a great time was enjoyed by everybody who took part. “The Great North Air Ambulance and Macmillan Cancer Support are two very different charities doing some fantastic work in the county. They inspire our staff to get behind them, and we try to help them out with funding the best we can.”

Weather permitting, the 10th Russell Armer Homes charity quiz night will take place this November.
